Ozark Seed Saving
farm tour and seed saving presentation

Friday September 26, 2008 in Brixey MO 7:00 PM

Presented by Jill Henderson

BRIXEY, MO Friday evening September 26, 2008, at 7:00 PM, Jill Henderson, a local farmer and seed saver, will present a talk in Brixey. The talk will focus on seed saving in the Ozarks. Jill will talk about many of the common food crops grown and local gardens and methods for saving and storing seeds from each variety.

Jill Henderson is a resident of Alton, MO.  Jill is an author, self-taught herbalist and a life-long organic gardener with a passion for sustainable agriculture and local food production.  Her most recent book, titled The Healing Power of Kitchen Herbs focuses on the simplicity of growing and using the world's most common herbs for both food and medicine.  A hands-on  grower of herbs, fruits and vegetables, Jill's experience and passion for propagating useful plants in the home garden has been instrumental in her desire to help others learn how to save their own garden seeds.

As the price of food and other commodities have risen, more and more people are turning towards gardening to provide their families with fresh, healthy and inexpensive alternatives to produce grown far from home.  Jill's fun and informative presentation, entitled Seed Saving 101, focuses on the basic principles and guidelines of saving ones own garden seeds.  In addition to teaching the basics, Jill will also touch on the reasons people have for saving seed: to save money, to preserve genetic diversity in food crops and to help prevent the unwanted consumption of GMO's so prevalent in the food market today.  The presentation is suitable for gardeners of all interests and experience levels, from beginners to advanced.

Solar Energy Feasibility
cost effectiveness vs. responsibility strategies

Friday November 9, 2007 in Brixey MO 7:00 PM

Presented by Jimis Damet, from Rocky Grove Sun Company

BRIXEY, MO Friday evening November 9, 2007, at 7:00 PM, Jimis Damet, an aternative energy specialist from Arkansas, will present a talk in Brixey. The talk will focus on options for using solar power, hydorelectric power and other renewable energy sources. The talk will be at the One Garden Library next to the Old Brixey Post Office on Highway N. This lecture is open to the public.

Jimis Damet started Rocky Grove Sun Company in 1986 and has been using solar electric and thermal power since 1982. He has designed and installed over 300 PV systems (Photo Voltaic also known as solar systems) as well as wind and microhydroelectric in the Ozark region and has promoted the idea of sustainable lifestyles as a whole system view of our impact on our environment.

Jimis recently installed a solar system in Brixey, generating roughly 500kilowatt hours of power per month. Solar power is becoming a better choice in MIssouri since recent passage of the Easy Connect Act which requires power companies to purchase extra power from home solar systems without additional insurance costs or other fees.
